Teaching Students to See
Teaching Students To See
Learning to truly 'see' is a critical—and often overlooked—step in every art student's development, so I prioritize this foundational skill with all my students from the very beginning.
In my teaching, I begin with the fundamental skill of learning to truly see — training students to observe shape, line, color, texture, and detail with clarity and intention. This foundational practice serves as the gateway to all four strands of the Georgia Standards of Excellence for Visual Art:
.
Creating: Students generate ideas and artwork with greater confidence and accuracy after developing strong observational skills.
.
Presenting: They learn to thoughtfully select and share work that reflects careful seeing and personal expression.
.
Responding: Students develop the ability to describe, analyze, and interpret what they see in their own work and the work of others using informed visual language.
.
Connecting: Through sharpened perception, students make richer personal, cultural, and cross-curricular connections, understanding how art reflects and shapes the world around them.
.
By prioritizing visual acuity from the very first days, I equip young artists with the essential perceptual foundation needed for meaningful growth across all strands and all future art experiences.
