About the Course

What Will I learn?

The Drawing for Watercolor Workshop™  gets you started right away with foundational elements in value, use of materials, and drawing practice, by leading you through the process of preparing and completing watercolor paintings based on your own comprehensive value studies in charcoal or pencil.

.

You'll learn to integrate drawing as a critical step in your painting process, and develop new skills and greatly improve your draftsmanship if you're already drawing. These skills will allow you to produce quality stand alone drawings, as well as elevate the caliber of your paintings as you gain new insights into the importance of form, shape, line, and value that are gleaned directly from the drawing process.

How Are the Lessons Presented?

The workshop is divided into three sections to ensure you're building the right foundations: Intro Modules, Exercise Modules, and Painting Modules. Each section builds on the other and provides clearly defined objectives and video instruction that will keep you working toward building your drawing and value skills.

  • Intro Modules:

    • We’ll begin with a look at materials, processes, and supplies, how they work, and incorporate a few introductory exercises to help you develop a comfort level before diving into more advanced exercises. Video topics include: Charcoal, Graphite, Paper, Fixatives, Making a Pounce, Erasers, and Sharpening.

  • Exercise Modules:

    • We’ll achieve a deeper understanding of value using charcoal and pencil, through a series of step-by-step exercises, studies, and completed drawings, that will all elevate the draftsmanship of your underpainting.

  • Painting Modules:

    • Now it's time to start putting everything you've learned so far into action, from the preliminary sketching, value assessments, and corrections, to transferring and working through a completed painting based on your comprehensive sketch. There are three separate, full-length paintings covered in the lessons, that walk you step-by-step through the detailed sketch, value assessments, and subsequent painting that provides complete color information and video instruction.

Is This Course Right For Me?

The Drawing for Watercolor Workshop™ is designed for all a wide variety of skills levels to complete at your own pace. If you are brand new to drawing, please note this is not a course on learning to draw for the first time. The main focus is value studies and incorporating sketching practice as a major component of your painting process.

Every exercise and lesson is step by step with commentary on key factors of value study as it relates to painting. All sketches and paintings are fully filmed from beginning to end with no lapses in sequence.

The entire workshop is sequential, meaning each exercise or lesson builds upon the previous session, so it is encouraged that students begin at the beginning and work systematically through the course for best comprehension and results.

Students can expect a noticeable shift in their value observations, drawing accuracy, and the impact it has to elevate the quality of their paintings.

Your Instructor

Jill Williams

I really look forward to making a connection with you through this workshop. As an instructor, and a painter, I've found that no single area of study can enhance and improve overall painting quality more than closely studying values through drawing practice.
I believe these lessons will establish a new level of technical understanding for you as an artist, allowing you to more fully express your own unique creative ideas through imagery and painting.
Enjoy this workshop, and your new level of artistic growth!
